Few dashboard warnings are as worrying as the check engine light. Also called an engine warning light, it can appear for many reasons—from a minor sensor issue to a fault that needs prompt attention. The best response is to have your vehicle professionally diagnosed rather than ignoring the light or hoping it disappears. At ATS Automotive, we provide car diagnostics in Hobart for all makes and models, including European and luxury vehicles. Our qualified technicians can identify the fault, explain what it means and recommend the appropriate repair. Is the Check Engine Light Solid or Flashing? The way the warning light behaves can help indicate how urgently you need assistance. A solid check engine light means the vehicle has detected a fault that should be checked soon. Your car may still drive normally, but continued driving without diagnosis can allow a small issue to become a more expensive repair. A flashing check engine light can indicate a more serious problem, such as an engine misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. If the light is flashing, the engine is running roughly, or you notice a loss of power, pull over safely and arrange for professional assistance. Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light May Be On Modern vehicles use a network of sensors and computer systems to monitor engine performance, emissions and fuel use. The check engine light can be triggered by many issues, including: Faulty oxygen, airflow or other engine sensors Ignition faults, such as worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils Fuel-system issues, including injectors or fuel-pressure faults Emissions-system faults Loose or damaged fuel caps Vacuum leaks or air-intake problems Battery-voltage or electrical faults Engine misfires or poor performance While some causes are relatively minor, the warning light cannot tell you exactly what has gone wrong. A diagnostic scan is needed to read the fault codes and investigate the underlying cause. Why You Should Not Ignore or Clear the Light It can be tempting to reset the warning light and continue driving, but this does not fix the problem. Clearing the code may hide an issue temporarily while the fault remains—and can make it harder to identify intermittent problems. Ignoring an engine warning light may lead to reduced fuel efficiency, poor performance, increased emissions or damage to other components. Early diagnosis gives you the best chance of resolving the issue before it turns into a larger repair. Diagnostics for European and Luxury Vehicles in Hobart European and luxury vehicles often use specialised systems and technology, so accurate diagnosis is particularly important. ATS Automotive has the knowledge and equipment to diagnose warning lights and faults in a wide range of vehicles, including European makes. Whether your vehicle has developed an engine light, reduced power, rough running, starting issues or an electrical fault, our team can inspect the vehicle and help you understand the next steps. When Should You Stop Driving? Book a diagnostic inspection as soon as possible if your check engine light is solid, especially if it is accompanied by reduced performance, unusual fuel use or a rough idle. Stop driving and seek assistance if the light is flashing or if you notice: A significant loss of power Engine shaking or misfiring Smoke or burning smells Overheating Loud or unusual engine noises Acting quickly can help protect your engine and avoid further damage. Book Car Diagnostics in Hobart If your check engine light has appeared, don’t leave it to chance. The team at ATS Automotive can diagnose the fault and provide clear advice on the repairs needed to get you back on the road with confidence. Contact or book your car diagnostics in Hobart today.

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At ATS Automotive in Hobart, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At ATS Automotive, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit ATS Automotive for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

Your vehicle’s transmission is one of the most complex and expensive components in your car. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of outdated advice and misinformation circulating about transmission maintenance. Believing these common myths can lead to costly repairs — or even full transmission replacement. Let’s separate fact from fiction. Myth #1: “Transmission Fluid Never Needs Changing” This is one of the most expensive myths out there. Transmission fluid lubricates internal components, reduces heat, and ensures smooth gear changes. Over time, it breaks down, becomes contaminated, and loses its protective properties. Ignoring transmission fluid changes can lead to: Slipping gears Overheating Harsh or delayed shifting Premature wear Most vehicles require transmission servicing at regular intervals (often between 40,000km–100,000km depending on manufacturer and driving conditions). Checking your owner’s manual — or speaking to a qualified technician — is the safest way to protect your vehicle. Myth #2: “If It’s Not Slipping, It’s Fine” Many drivers assume that if their car is still moving, everything must be okay. In reality, transmission problems often start subtly. Early warning signs can include: Slight hesitation when changing gears Small shudders while accelerating Unusual noises Transmission fluid that looks dark or smells burnt Catching issues early can mean the difference between a routine service and a major rebuild. Myth #3: “Transmission Flushes Are Always Bad” You may have heard that a transmission flush will “kill” your gearbox. The truth is more nuanced. A professional transmission service performed correctly — and at the right time — is safe and beneficial. Problems typically arise when: The transmission has already been severely neglected The wrong fluid is used The service is performed incorrectly That’s why having your transmission inspected before servicing is essential. At ATS Automotive we will assess fluid condition and advise whether a standard fluid change or a full flush is appropriate. Myth #4: “Manual Transmissions Don’t Need Servicing” Manual transmissions are often considered “maintenance free” — but that’s not accurate. Manual gearboxes still rely on transmission oil for lubrication and heat management. Over time, that oil degrades just like automatic transmission fluid. Clutch wear, hard shifting, and internal component damage can result from neglected servicing. Manual vehicles still require scheduled maintenance to ensure longevity. Myth #5: “Transmission Repairs Are Always Cheaper Than Servicing” Waiting until something breaks is almost always more expensive than preventative maintenance. A routine transmission service costs significantly less than: Valve body replacement Clutch pack replacement Torque converter failure Full transmission rebuild Preventative servicing helps extend the life of your vehicle and reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns. The Bottom Line Transmission servicing isn’t optional — it’s preventative maintenance that protects one of the most expensive components in your vehicle. Believing common myths can end up costing thousands in avoidable repairs. Regular inspections, fluid checks, and professional servicing keep your transmission operating smoothly and reliably. If you’re unsure when your transmission was last serviced, now is the perfect time to have it checked. Early maintenance is always cheaper than major repairs.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of outdated advice and misinformation circulating about transmission maintenance. Believing these common myths can lead to costly repairs — or even full transmission replacement.
